Ecoplank recycled plastic boards in contact with water

Why do recycled materials not absorb moisture? Explained using Ecoplank boards as an example

Moisture destroys building materials slowly but surely. Swelling, cracking, mould – these are the effects that appear season after season when a material absorbs water. We explain why boards from Ecoplank made from recycled plastic do not have this problem – and what this means in practice.

1. Where does the moisture problem in building materials come from?

Recycled plastic boards and moisture is a key topic when choosing a material for outdoor use. Wood, concrete, some composites – they all have a structure that absorbs water to a greater or lesser extent. And water that gets into a material sooner or later takes its toll: it causes swelling, cracking, mould growth and gradual destruction of the structure.

For terraces, jetties and horse stalls, the problem is particularly serious. The material is constantly exposed to rain, ground moisture and frost. Every cycle of water freezing and thawing inside the material speeds up its degradation.

2. Why do recycled plastic boards not absorb moisture?

The answer lies in the structure of the material. Plastic – including the PE and PP used by Ecoplank – has a dense, non-absorbent structure. It has no pores or spaces that water could penetrate.

Wood, on the other hand, consists of fibres and cells that naturally transport water – this is part of its biological structure. Even after cutting and drying, wood retains this property and reacts to changes in humidity throughout its service life.

Recycled PE and PP materials do not have this feature. Water has nowhere to go – it simply runs off the surface.

3. What does this mean in practice?

Zero water absorption is not just a matter of the durability of the material itself. It brings a range of specific benefits felt by both the contractor and the end user.

The material does not swell after rain – the boards keep their dimensions regardless of the weather. In practice, boards from Ecoplank do not react to moisture the way traditional materials do. The expansion gaps planned during installation stay the same after one year and after ten years. No deformation, no unevenness, no boards working loose from their fixings. No moisture inside the material also means no conditions for mould, fungi and bacteria to grow. This is particularly important where hygiene matters – in stables, horse stalls and jetties over water.

4. Ecoplank – how does it work in real conditions?

Ecoplank boards are made from recycled PE and PP – high-density plastics that have been used for years in construction and agriculture precisely because of their resistance to moisture and chemicals.

In practice, this means a material that needs no extra protection against moisture after installation. It does not need impregnating, painting or protecting before winter. Just install it and… forget about it.

Ecoplank projects work in extreme conditions – in horse stalls, on jetties over water and on roof terraces fully exposed to the weather. In each of these places the material behaves the same way – predictably and without surprises.

5. Summary

Zero water absorption is one of the key properties of recycled materials and one of the main reasons why contractors and investors choose boards from Ecoplank.

A material that does not absorb water does not swell, rot or need maintenance. It is easier to install, more durable in use and cheaper over several seasons. That is why Ecoplank recycled plastic boards and their moisture resistance are one of their greatest advantages.

Frequently asked questions

Why does recycled plastic not absorb water?

Polyethylene and polypropylene have a dense, non-absorbent structure – with no pores or spaces that water could penetrate. Wood consists of fibres and cells that naturally transport water, and it keeps this property even after drying.

Do recycled plastic boards swell after rain?

No. They keep their dimensions regardless of the weather, so the expansion gaps planned during installation look the same after one year and after ten years.

Does mould grow on recycled plastic boards?

No. No moisture inside the material means no conditions for mould, fungi and bacteria to grow – which is why the material works well in stables, stalls and on jetties over water.

Do the boards need protecting before winter?

No. The material needs no impregnation, painting or protective product before winter.

What happens to the material during freeze–thaw cycles?

Water does not penetrate the structure, so there is nothing to break it apart from the inside. In wood and concrete, every freeze–thaw cycle speeds up degradation.

Are recycled plastic boards suitable for jetties over water?

Yes. Ecoplank projects work in horse stalls, on jetties over water and on roof terraces – everywhere the material behaves predictably.
